Please listen to this Keller message. From about 14:50 on, Keller does a lengthy exposition of Augustine's "Confessions" in light of the prodigal son story.  This is really quite well done and is a helpful supplement/encouragment to your Confessions readings. The gist is this:

Idolatry is a function of disordered loves: when you love lower things more than higher things, you are starved, enslaved, and torn against yourself. the Trinity teaches us, though, that love is at the center of reality and we are therefore meant for communion with both other people and God. the only way to be healed of our disordered loves is not to depend on self-effort, but to reflect upon the beauty of Christ.
