Title:
Emergency Planner

Pandemic flu. Hurricanes. Dirty bombs. Andrew McMahan plans for the worst. In Emergency Management, he's learned to anticipate the broken and tragic situations that New York City may someday face. But even in the brokenness, great acts of heroism, renewal, and rebirth often follow. It’s a reminder of the principle illustrated again and again in the Bible – God working good out of dark times. Still, Emergency Management is not always thrilling. It requires slogging through the many mundane details and meetings essential to preparing for emergencies. Since Gotham, Andrew’s begun to see the Christian walk as a parallel: our daily devotionals may not always feel exciting, but they are essential in preparing us for critical moments and for developing good habits. When difficult times arrive, we’ll be ready to make the right decision.

Hello,

Books and Culture recently did a review on Robert Putnam's latest book, American Grace: How Religion Divides and Unites Us, stating, "Although their own survey includes a solid battery of belief items, the authors repeatedly deny that what people believe has any major relevance to social or political values..." As we all know too well, the average Christian cannot articulate how the content of their faith informs the way they live their lives in the public square, and the result is that faith is more of a social phenomenon than a substantive historical reality that gives direction to what we believe and how we behave. We live in a time when the need to clearly articulate our faith and winsomely engage the world is great. My hope is that we, as a growing community, will respond to and wrestle with this need, proclaiming the relevance and power of the gospel in every sphere of life.

To this end, I hope you find these Gotham newsletters to be a welcomed resource in bridging together this community of fellows, alumni, mentors, and all others interested in the mission of Gotham. We welcome your voice and active participation as we mutually desire to strengthen one another in heart, head, and hands.

Blessings,
David H. Kim - Director, Gotham Fellowship

A Pastor’s Perspective on the Gotham Fellowship
David interviews John Lin
John LinProfessional diversity is a significant component of what makes the Gotham Fellowship impactful. This year, we’ve broadened the vocational spectrum even further by including a pastor from our very own church—Rev. John Lin. While we’re used to seeing him preach from the pulpit, John participates in Gotham representing the vocation of church-based ministry.

Foundations of a World-view - an Architect's Perspective, by Joanna Stephens
Joanna StephensArchitects have an intense passion for what they do. Although the design profession includes aspects of various worldviews, this common passion stems largely from one of architects' most deep-seated motivations: a Platonic search for truth and the quest to make this truth known to the world through what we build. In the industry, one way this desire is altruistically labeled is “improving the population's visual literacy.”
